Have you ever looked in the mirror and longed to loose some extra pounds? Have you ever desired to join your children in a fun physical activity, but knew that you lacked the stamina to participate? Have you ever started a diet or exercise program then gave up?
If you find yourself in any of these categories, you’re not alone. Countless individuals across the globe view physically fitness as an insurmountable obstacle. From failed diets to idle gym memberships, obtaining the body you’ve always dreamed of for many has become nothing more than another unfulfilled new years resolution.
Statistics have proven that crash diet and quick fix work out routines can lead to initially weight loss, but usually end in weight relapses and even eating disorders. Frustrated and hopeless, many have settled for pseudo “contentment” rather than obtaining the heath they desire, ultimately forfeiting any chance of living life to the fullest. Make no mistake about it; life is a whole lot better in shape then out of shape.
Redefining Health
It appears that many of the health and fitness challenges that people face today are not due to a lack of desire, but a lack of understanding. Society has lead us to believe that being healthy means being “skinny”. This is the farthest thing from the truth. In reality true health is not relegated to your physical body alone. Our Creator has his given us a holistic approach to health that is found in the Holy Scriptures.
3 John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. KJV
God equates the heath of your body to the health of your soul. Your soul consists of your mind, will, and emotions. Let’s examine these three aspects of the soul on our journey to a healthier you:
-
Mind – This is where the perception of you is influenced. Much of the struggles with health are based upon what we think about ourselves. You must be cognizant of the fact that you are valuable in the sight of God whether you are a size 8 or 18.
-
Will – Your desire determines your destiny. Contrary to popular marketing strategies, there are no shortcuts to a healthy body. The union of your desire and God’s strength will empower you to persevere on your road to a healthier you.
-
Emotions – When kept under control, your emotions are a powerful asset. Indignation against procrastination, unhealthy food, and a lack of exercise can help propel you in the right direction.
When your soul gets healthy your body will follow. Now your motivation is no longer external but internal. As a former professional athlete I have seen the different first hand. Upon retirement, many of my former colleagues have gained excessive amounts of weight, succumbed to unhealthy habits, and have even died prematurely because their health was a matter of profession not a matter of the heart.
3 Keys To A Healthier You
Now that we have established your soul as the center of your makeover, here are three keys to keep in mind on your journey to a healthier you:
-
Self Evaluation
In your quest to become a whole and healthy individual you must evaluate yourself and your relationships. Yourself because your motivation will determine God’s approval of your efforts. Your relationships because they are tied to your emotions and your emotions are attached to your health.
-
Realistic Vision
Any aspirations of achieving physical wholeness can only be measured by setting goals. Make sure that your goals are in line with your purpose, body type and life objectives. Do not allow the social norms of beauty to dictate the direction of your healthy ambitions.
-
Mapping the Course
After you’ve evaluated your motives and set your goals, now it’s time for a plan of action. Consult with a professional dietitian or personal trainer for assistant in developing your strategy.
Always remember that there are no short cuts to physical well being. True fitness is a lifestyle that is cultivated over time. On your path to a healthier you there will be some bumps in the road, but stay the course! The temporary setbacks cannot compare to the fulfillment of reaching your ultimate goal. A healthier you!
